Accommodation

Sir,—ln our cities and provincial towns there is a so-called residential accommodation shortage all caused by the price freeze. People with below-market rentals are unwilling to share flats and houses with others, and why not? They can afford to with cheap rents. The Housing Corporation and councils are also to be blamed for the shortage. The Housing Corporation’s rental stock is far under used with single people living in family homes. I can even show the destitute a council flat that has been empty for over a month. So central Government leaves the market place free of controls and the private investor will provide the accommodation for people of New Zealand. — Yours, etc., MURRAY LUDEMANN. July 18, 1983.
