Cheap imports
Sir, — We have followed the economic policies advocated by Mr Morel (July 15) for 50 years. They have enabled a consumer rip-off, made our export industries hopelessly uneconomic, and caused large-scale unemployment. Mr Morel has a vested interest in the status quo as secretary of a union whose industry is so inefficient it had to be excluded from C.E.R. Because of his oft-repeated concern for the low-paid worker he should be advocating the rapid restructuring of the rubber industry to enable it to compete with the United States and Australia. There is only one product this country can afford as a cost input for its export industries and that is the cheapest; anything else costs jobs. Mr Morel’s gravy train is coming to the end of the ride. The sooner he and others in privileged monopolies realise it the better for the workers and consumers of this country. — Yours, etc., J. C. GLASS. July. 15, 1983.
