PA Gisborne The New Zealand canoeist, Alan Thompson, failed by a tenth of a second to beat the world and Olympic champion, Rudiger Helm of East Germany, over 1000 m at an international kayak regatta in Denmark. The regatta is the last major warm-up event before the world titles, in Tampere. The Aucklander, Ed Richards, continued his improved form for ninth in the kl. In the k 4, East Germany crossed the line in 3min 5.2 s with New Zealand second in 3min 5.35.
