Lions attack refs
NZPA staff correspondent The Lions added to their already long catalogue of tour complaints on Saturday when they launched a sharp attack on the standard of New Zealand refereeing. Statements by the manager, Mr Willie John McBride, the coach, Mr Jim Telfer, and the captain, Ciaran Fitzgerald, which began as a selective attack on Mr Keith Lawrence, the man who controlled the tourists’ match against Counties on Saturday, developed into a broad swipe at all New Zealand referees and even at local linesmen.
Mr Mcßride was especially harsh in his criticism, suggesting that the neutral referees who controlled the four test matches between the Lions and New Zealand this season should be assisted by neutral linesmen. “There were quite a few things let go in today’s match,” Mcßride began. “In fact, I would have to say there is doubt in my mind about many things. “I think it’s fair to say the standard of refereeing has been the same in all games. It has been very disappointing.”
