Jail for cat cruelty
Two colour photographs of a cat being held down a toilet bowl with a knife in its mouth led to the appearance in the District Court in Christchurch yesterday of a Timaru man on a charge of cruelly ill-treating the cat.
William Spencer Davis, aged 22, admitted the offence, which took place in March at the address of a motor-cycle gang in
rimaru. Judge Fraser sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment to be served concurrently with the twoyear term he is now serving. Detective Sergeant M. A. Fink said the photographs were found when police executed a seach warrant at the gang’s address. When located Davis denied the offence although
tattoos on his hand matched those of the hand holding the cat in the photograph, said Sergeant Fink.
The defendant asserted that the cat had been run over and that he was “putting it out of its misery,” said the duty solicitor, Mr J. J. Brandts-Giesen.
Counsel said the defendant had pleaded guilty contrary to the advice he had been given.
