Sentence for assault

Two members of the Devil’s Henchmen motorcycle gang, who earlier admitted assaulting Colin Leonard Quirke on December 5, last year, were each sent to prison for two months when they appeared for sentence before Judge Fraser in the District Court yesterday. They are Keith John Knight, aged 21, a process worker, and Mark Sutherland, aged 26, a mechanic, who were represented by Mr M. J. Glue.

Both men were appearing

for sentence on a charge of assault arising from a group attack on Mr Quirke in the course of which he suffered serious stab wounds, said the Judge. No evidence had been produced to show that either defendant had anything to do with the stabbing, said the Judge. As each was in custody awaiting trial on a charge of murder, the Judge agreed with counsel that a short prison sentence was appropriate. Mr Glue had said that

neither defendant had inflicted the stab wound which had, in fact, been done without their knowledge.

When they discovered Mr Quirke’s injuries they had tried to do something for him.

Neither of the accused had a serious criminal record and both were good workers, said Mr Glue. Both regretted their part in what had been a “cowardly” assault by a gang on one person, he said.
