Attempted murder charge laid

Bail was “strenuously” opposed when a man appeared before Judge Fraser in the District Court yesterday on a charge relating to a stabbing incident on a bus in Riccarton Road late on Thursday. Derek William Ryder, aged 18, a technician (Mr J. J. Brandts-Giesen) was remanded in custody to July 15. He is charged with the attempted murder of Peter Thomas Buschman. Detective Sergeant M. A. Fink opposed bail because of the seriousness of the charge and the posssibility of an ever more serious charge being laid. The defendant did not plead. INDECENCY OFFENCES There had been no intention of offending any further then exposing himself, said a man who admitted three charges of obscene exposure in Beckenham Park. The defendant, a married man who was granted final suppression of his name told the police that he knew he had a problem but had been afraid to seek help because he did not know who to turn to, said Sergeant Fink. The prosecutor said the Solice had received a numer of complaints about men exposing themselves before children from the nearby primary school in Beckenham Park in the last three months. The offences had occurred when the defendant had been out jogging. Counsel, Mr P. J. Egden, suggested that his client be placed on probation for a period. The Judge ordered that the defendant undergo such psychiatric treatment and I or counselling as might be directed while on probation over the next 18 months. DEPOSITIONS Trial by jury was elected by a girl, aged 17, charged with committing incest with a man, aged 37. The girl who was represented by Mr M. J. Glue, was remanded on bail to August 1 for the taking of depositions. While on remand the defendant is to undergo a psychiatric examination. The man, facing a chargfe of committing incest with the girl, had earlier been remanded on bail to July 22. He also is being pyschiatrically examined. Interim suppression of their names was granted to both defendants. THEFT CHARGE

Cash and 39 cheques to a total value of $2751, were allegedly stolen by an unemployed man, aged 22. Shaun Kevin McAllister, is charged with stealing the money, the property of Cobcraft Potters’ Supplies, Ltd, on June 7.

He was remanded on bail, without plea, to July 15. 17 OFFENCES Offences involving property worth $14,500 were admitted by Ward lan Magon, aged 18, unemployed. He was convicted and remanded in custody to July 15 for a probation report and sentence. Magon had admitted seven charges of receiving property to a total value of $13,209, four charges of burglary, three charges of theft involving property worth $1313, one charge of possessing cannabis, and a charge of possessing the drug for sale or supply. The offences were committed between August, 1982, and March, this year. Sergeant Fink, said that Magon was living for the last 12 months at a city address with a group of people who were engaged in criminal activities. The defendant had been involved in the criminal behaviour from time to time and had sold property to several receivers — one of them an undercover police officer working in the city, said Sergeant Fink. ROBBERY Police allege that an Auckland man, while armed with a replica pistol, attempted to rob a building society cashier of cash on July 6. Peter Hendriks, aged 26, unemployed, did not plead to the charge and four charges of incurring debts. He was remanded in custody to July 15. $3OOO BAIL Bail was set at $3OOO for a man, described as a managing director, facing charges of keeping a brothel in Papanui Road, and unlawfully possessing .223 calibre rifle on June 4. No pleas have been entered by the defendant, aged 41, who is represented by Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon. Interim suppression was continued. Bail was set at $lOOO together with two sureties, each of $lOOO. The defendant had been held in custody while undergoing a psychiatric examination. PERIODIC DETENTION Periodic detention of four months and the payment of $1466 compensation was the sentence imposed on a man who fraudulently used a bank credit card to obtain goods to a total vale of $1466. Steven Russell Thompson, aged 21, unemployed (Mr E. Bedo) committed the offences between May 27 and June 3, because, he told police, he was “broke” at the time and had sold the goods to get money. Thompson now had a job and was prepared to pay compensation, said Mr Bedo.
