Smart youngsters from N.Z. families

The smart juveniles, Jasmaralla (TT, lmin 57.35) and Jayare’s Dream (2min 0.95), which produced top performances in Australia last week, come from New Zealand families. Both young pacers are from exported New Zea-land-bred mares by the successful Knight Dream stallion, Lumber Dream (1:58.4), which is fast becoming one of New Zealand’s most respected broodmare sires, having left the dams of Roydon Scott, Sapling (197879 pacer of the year), San Mario (lmin 55.85) and Steady Lady, to name only a few in a growing list. Jasmaralla became the fastest two-year-old over a mile in Australia or New Zealand, when she timetrialled in lmin 57.3 s at Moonee Valley in Melbourne last Friday, while Jayare’s Dream recorded
his eighth win in 10 starts for just over $57,000 when he won the ?40,000 New South Wales Sires’ Stakes at Harold Park in Sydney on the same evening in 2min 0.95. Jasmaralla is a filly by Tarport Low from Shu Fly, by Lumber Dream from Lee Averil (by Armbro Del), an unraced granddaughter of Bonnie Averil, which left the 1971 New Zealand Cup winner, True Averil (1:58.8). Lee Averil, the granddam of Jasmaralla, was sold by her Christchurch breeder Mr Clarrie Rhodes to the McNiece brothers of Bendigo at a bloodstock sale at Motukarara in 1976. Lee Averil, then six and carrying Shu Fly in embryo, was sold for $4OOO. Other fine winners from this family include Garrison, 36 Australian wins and Good Sport (eight wins), Averil’s Dream (2:5.2), Out to Dream (2:1.6), Noble Averil (2:4.2) and Prince Averil, among others. Jasmaralla is unbeaten in six starts in Australia, the last being in a filly division of the Victoria Sires’ Stakes. Her time-trial record was lmin Is faster then Disco Dancer’s New Zealand record trial for a two-year-old set at Alexandra Park two seasons back. Jayare’s Dream, a son of J.R. Skipper, is from the Lumber Dream mare So In Love, by Thurber Frost from Garetta, which was bred by Mrs R. E. Templeton of Templeton.
Garetta has left the winners My Dream (2:5.4), the trotter, Canta Libra and Marshall Field, while she is from the same family that earlier left a well-per-formed pacer in Dignus (11 wins including the 1957 New South Wales Derby), and Udette, a useful winner.
