Rattray heads ski list
The Canterbury ski-racing season should get off to a good start this week-end with more than 100 competitors entered for the first event, the Martini Early Bird at Mount Hutt. Among the entrants are the two leading Canterbury women’s racers, Kate Rattray, a member of the New Zealand A team and an Olympic hopeful, and Mandy Vryenhoek, a member of the B team. Miss Rattray, aged 20, was the top woman on the
national circuit last year and spent four months training and racing in North America over the northern winter. The men’s entry includes four members of the New Zealand B team, Mark Fulton (Nelson), and Graeme Goodwin, Richard Harrison, and Darrell Ransfield (all Canterbury). The Canterbury trio were all based at Vail, Colorado, during the northern winter and competed at events at numerous
other ski resorts in the Other leading Canterbury racers who will be making the trip to Mount Hutt include Roland Kuhn and Bill Brownlee. The Southern Districts Ski Association is also sending a team of racers, among them David Menzies. A giant slalom will be raced on Saturday and an open slalom on Sunday. There will be five agegroups competing — under--11, under-13, under-15, under- 17, and over-17.
