Melville fine ambassador
Nigel Melville, the English half-back, might not play any more rugby on the Lions tour of New Zealand, but he has left a lasting impression with the pupils of Casebrook Intermediate. In spite of a bad neck injury which forced him .from the field only 6min into the game against North Auckland on Saturday Melville cheerfully fulfilled an assignment at Casebrook Intermediate yesterday morning. The 22-year-old Melville talked to the full assembly
of 550 children and then the first XV, the members of which he presented with badges. According to the deputyprincipal of the school, Mr Russell Bain, Melville fielded a barrage of questions and spoke very well during his hour-long visit: “He had an endless supply of humour.” Mr Bain said that there had been a tremendous response to the young halfback “and the girls thought he was neat.” He was a fine ambassador.
Melville who arrived in New Zealand only three weeks ago after the injury to the Welsh half-back, Terry Holmes, has played just 86min of rugby on the tour, but has impressed as a fine prospect. He has yet to make his debut for England, breaking a fibula after being picked for the team earlier this year. Ironically, his replacement on this tour is the present England international half-back, Steve Smith. __________
