Fourth medal for canoeists
NZPA-Reuter Duisberg, West Germany Two New Zealand canoeists, Alan Thompson and Paul McDonald, won a bronze medal in the twoman kayak K2 500 m event on the second day of an international regatta in Duisberg, West Germany, yesterday. The pair came home third behind Swedish and West German pairs.
The medal was the fourth for New Zealand at the regatta, which is part of their build-up for next month’s world championships in Finland. On Sunday, Thompson won the KI 1000 m and then teamed with lan Ferguson, Geoff Walker and McDonald to win the K 4 1000 m. Ferguson won the silver medal in the single event behind his team-mate.
The New Zealanders began their championships lead-up with two wins at the Nottingham regatta a fortnight ago and race in Copenhagen on July 8. In other events on the second day of the regatta, lan Ferguson, of Auckland, finished fourth in the KI 500 m and Grant Bramwell and Peter Duncan, of Gisborne, were seventh in the K2 10,000 m event.
