Rubbish planning urged

Wellington reporter New Zealanders throw away more than two million tonnes of solid waste a year, according to a Board of Health report on refuse. The refuse goes to 481 rubbish dumps and fills them at the rate of almost four million cubic metres a year. The report recommends a management plan for each refuse-disposal site. It also recommends the safer disposal of hazardous wastes. All communities with more than 5000 people have a refuse collection, but twothirds of communities under 500 people receive none. At least 20 communities in the 1000 to 5000 population range have no refuse collection. Local authorities with such communities are urged to consider collection services.
