Trout poachers net big hauls
PA Rotorua Bay of Plenty Wildlife Service officers ’ are concerned that poachers are taking trout as they move into spawning streams in big numbers.
One Rotorua officer said the seasonal cycle meant that big numbers of trout were present in streams which could be as little as 30cm wide.
Recently, three men were apprehended with trout in
two separate incidents. After a joint investigation by police and senior wildlife officers, a man allegedly selling trout from his car in the Kawerau Tavern carpark was apprehended. It is alleged that the man had 74 fish in his possession, and had sold seven for $1 each.
At Turangi, two men allegedly in possession of a quantity of trout and poaching gear were apprehended.
