Assailant still sought
The police were last evening still looking for the man who assaulted a Linwood chemist at his shop on Thursday evening. The chemist, Mr Derek Leeming, was struck on the face so hard that he thought he had been shot with a firearm which the intruder was carrying. Mr Leeming underwent surgery in Christchurch Hospital last evening, and was later reported to be
comfortable. A spokesman for the C. 1.8. said that detectives had checked the yellow Mazda vehicle which they had earlier thought may have had some connection with the incident. The C. 1.8. was satisfied that the vehicle was legitimately in the area. The police had had some assistance from the public yesterday to help them in their inquiries, but
more public help was sought. Anyone who saw a young male European in his mid20s loitering anywhere near 164 Woodham Road between 9 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Thursday is asked to get in touch with the C. 1.8. The man who struck Mr Leeming was masked by a green scarf and a blue crash helmet. He fled from the scene without taking money or drugs.
