Two ‘outsiders’ in soccer squad
Two players from outside the Rothmans League have been named in the Canterbury invitation XI soccer squad to meet the English second division champions, Queen’s Park Rangers, later this month. Mark Smith, the CashmereWanderers striker, who topped the individual goalscoring list for the Hertz League last season, and the Shamrock goal-keeper, Neil Caswell, are selected along with eight Christchurch Mogal United players, three from Dunedin and two from McKee Nelson United. The selectors . (Messrs lan Marshall and Martin Stewart) have included just one player who has not appeared in Christchurch before, Ken Drakeford, the diminutive Dunedin Technical attacker. The Canterbury match, on
May 22, will be the first of a three-game tour by Q.P.R., the others being in Wellington two days later and at Auckland on May 29. The Q.P.R. squad includes just one player who has toured New Zealand before — the sweeper, Glen Roeder, who was a member of the England B party which drew, 2-2, with an inspired United side at Q.E. II in 1978 during a brief visit. The Canterbury, squad is: Bobby Almond, Allan Boath, Ricky Hill, Paul Hillis, Grant Turner, Frank van Hattum, Johann Verweij and Paul Wilkinson (United), Mark Smith (Cashmere), John Enoka, Eric James (Nelson), Ken Drakeford (Dunedin Technical), Mike Glubb, Ceri Evans (Dunedin City), Neil Caswell (Shamrock). The captain has not yet been announced.
