Postmen and dogs

Sir,—l was disgusted by a suggestion of W. V. Dromgoole (May 2) to destroy all dogs on the roam, and heartily agree with Estelle Win and G. Boyle (May 4). As a postie I had no trouble With dogs, possibly because I respected them. They did likewise, but I know of other posties who were terrified of dogs and as they showed fear, this was conveyed to dogs by scent, something the human species does not understand will often cause a dog to respond by barking louder or even nip. There is also the odd postie who because of dislike and fear of dogs will antagonise them with an unjust kick. All creatures have a place and part to play in the world. Dogs have proved their worth but many humans have little to their credit and foolishly do not realise that compassion and kindness give a far greater reward in the divine justice of our lives.— Yours, etc., I. V. RENNER. May 4, 1983.
