Future of Waitutu

Sir,—“lt may now be too late to save the beautiful native forests in the Maori block from being milled,” Oliver Riddell concludes his article (“The Press,” April 30). It need not be. In 1969 Maoriowned Lake Waikaremoana was leased to the Urewera National Park in an agreement negotiated by Durban Maclntyre, then Minister of Lands and now Deputy

Prime Minister. In 1982 virgin native forest on the privately owned Taitapu Estate, due to be logged under private contract, was saved when the Government agreed to make an offer to the owners; subsequently, 4000 hectares of the estate were added to the North-west Nelson Forest Park. There is nothing to prevent a lease arrangement in the case of Waitutu. The incorporation, for example, could retain title to the land on behalf of the Maori owners, with the standing trees being leased to the Crown in exchange for agreed compensation payments. Precedents for Government involvement have clearly already been established. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. May 2, 1983.
