Adoption bill
Sir,—Hearing Jonathan Hunt’s comments on radio after the shelving, once again, of his Adult Adoption Information Bill, and knowing that Mr Muldoon is one of those Ministers referred to as having personal feelings on the matter, can one deduce that Mr Muldoon speaks from personal experience of the “mental anguish” of birth mothers (fathers) should their terrible secret be discovered? I suggest that if any product of youthful dalliance by our great leader discovered his parenthood, he would hardly want it to be public knowledge either. The most important matter in this whole issue is the rights of the adoptee. Social workers from all agencies, and staff of psychiatric institutions constantly see the problems caused by the feelings of non-identity in adoptees. It is more than depressing to hear our elected representatives arguing, bickering and name-calling when such an important issue, involving many thousands of people seems doomed to be kept behind a cloak of silence. — Yours, etc., JUNE PEKA.
