Sleep problems
Sir,—The psychology department of Canterbury University is inviting parents of children with sleep problems to participate in a programme where the psychologist helps parents work out a “sleep management strategy.” I have a horrible mental picture of parents sitting with pencil poised while their heartbroken child cries for the loving arms and reassurance that is every child’s birthright. At night children are vulnerable to frightening feelings that are more readily suppressed by day. Many babies spend minimal time close to mother’s body where they belong and consequently miss out on the feeling of security and relaxation that children in other cultures take for granted. Our cold, clinical, detached attitude to children dating from the Truby King era has repercussions now in overcrowded hospitals, prisons, and unprecedented addiction to alcohol and food as a comfort symbol. The best person to give advice about children is a serene mother with serene children. — Yours, etc., L. M. ISAACS. May 6, 1983.
