Whitcombe’s story books
Sir,—l have been working for some years on a listing of some 450 titles in over 1500 editions of the series of the familiar Story Books and Live Readers issued by Whitcombe and Tombs; over 11 million of these books were produced between 1908 and the 19605. It would be appreciated if any of your readers could provide information on the history of this series, including the persons who wrote, adapted or illustrated individual works. I would also be interested to learn of, or obtain, copies or collections of these story books for inclusion in the bibliography which I hope to publish in New Zealand in the near future. Details should include title and Whitcombe’s “Gt print number at end of text for identification pur-'
poses. I have a collection of 600 of these works in the University of Melbourne Library, of which I am honorary bibliographer. My address is 237 Waverley Road, East Malvern, Victoria, 3145, Australia.—Yours, etc., ian f. McLaren. May 3, 1983.
