Baby seal ban

Sir,—For the first time in perhaps three centuries mother seals have nursed their babies in peace on the ice nurseries of Canada. The European Economic Community ban on the import of baby seal products means that at least 360,000 baby seals have been saved from the butchers. Mr Brian Davies, executive director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, who has fought for almost 20 years, is at last seeing results of his. hard work. Over the years Mr Davies has been arrested, jailed and physically and verbally abused; all he desired was to end “the hunt without pity.” The Canadian Government has done all it can to discredit him to the rest of the world. It did not succeed but had the discredit thrown back at it. I am confident that the annual slaughter has been stopped forever.—Yours, etc., LEONNE WATSON. . May 2, 1983.
