Teacher training
Sir,—Many concerned people who have commented were as disappointed as I was with the reply from the secretary of the Education Board to my inquiry about the number of applicants for teacher trdilpng who declined appointment
Many senior officers in the schools, universities and education services have entered the profession from extra-city areas. Admission to the teachers’ colleges will not now be financially possible for them unless their parents can subsidise them heavily for a period of three years. This really is a matter of national interest and importance. Teaching deserves the best students available. Though the reply stated that “several” applicants refused studentships, I hope we can assume that the board has more definite figures it can make available. — Yours, etc.,
F. N. WYLDE. May 3, 1983.
