No rise in wheat price

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, told wheat growers yesterday that there would be no price rise for wheat while the wage and price freeze continued.

Mr Templeton was presenting the prizes for the Wheat 'B2 competition at Lincoln College (See report on Farm and Station pages). He acknowledged that wheat growers had recently made strong representations to the Government to raise the price of wheat from the present $204 a tonne to $221 a tonne, which would have been the price under the industries pricing formula. He repeated that the fight against inflation must be the top priority of the Government and the nation.

Wheat growers have indicated that they will not accept this decision, and they have organised a series of protest meetings, starting next week.
