Fire destroys station hut
Guide Hut, a musterers' hut on Molesworth station, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday. The station manager, Mr Donald Reid, said that two musterers discovered the smouldering ruin of the 25-year-old hut about 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The three-room hut, which slept eight, would cost $20,000 to $25,000 to, replace. It was not insured. The hut was situated in
the Awatere Valley, west of the Inland Kaikouras. The Blenheim police said that they were seeking information from a man who had been seen in the area on a yellow “old-style” bicycle. Mr Reid said the loss of the hut would create problems for the station. It was used by musterers as a stock camp during the spring muster.
