M.P.s’ visit to South Africa
Sir. — David Dumergue talks ,of "blacks in their pinstripe suits, and women in their silk blouses and tweed skirts" walking the streets of Johannesburg. Only black people with employment passes are allowed into that exclusively white city. How many pin-stripe suits and silk blouses did Mr Dumergue spot in the dumping grounds, called “homelands." which litter South Africa? “South Africa is oozing prosperity"? Last November they borrowed two billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund, the same amount it costs annually to keep apartheid's war machine in Namibia and Southern Angola. Facts before prejudice. — Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. February 15. 1983.
