The economy

Sir, — Two items of news on the front page of "The Press," (February 15) tell it all. One item informs us that the total of registered unemployed exceeds 100,000, and the other that the Prime Minister 'is appalled by New Zealand’s loss in the cricket. It is obvious that the Prime Minister is more upset by this cricket loss than by the current chaos caused by his economic policy. (Or is it lack of economic policy?) We know that a win to New Zealand would have meant a third game in the finals of the World Series cricket. The Prime Minister knows this would have insured our distraction from the realities of political, economic, and social crises for a few more days at least. After all a Government-backed Springbok tour managed exactly that for several months in 1981. Furthermore, such are the vagaries of politics in New' Zealand that a Prime Minister can even pontificate on the bowling attributes of a Denis Lillee while Rome burns. — Yours, etc., RON SIMPSON. February 15, 1983.
