Disabled want lift in Town Hall restaurant

A hydraulic lift, which would allow disabled patrons easier access to the Town Hall restaurant, has been suggested by the Christchurch Co-ordinating Council for the Handicapped. In a letter to the Town Hall Board the council said that the installation of a lift would overcome the internal steps. The Christchurch City Council's deputy general manager of works said that a small lift would cost between $30,000 and $40,000. Also, there would be no suitable location for a lift that would

not cause severe disruption to the working of the restaurant, he said. The council also suggested that a sliding door would provide better access to the toilet. The door would be easier to open and close, and the extra width given by the sliding door would allow room to turn inside the toilet. The Town Hall Board will make a decision on these suggestions at the next meeting. after a full report of costs and a detailed plan.
