Walker’s mile attempt
PA Wanganui John Walker will return to Wanganui next week for his long-promised attempt on Jurgen May's world best time of 3min 53.3 s for a mile on a grass track. Walker was to have made the attempt before Christmas — a week after winning the street mile event in Wanganui — but was ruled out because of the same
viral infection which delayed his appearance in the track series. Walker has been in the United States for the last fortnight on the indoor circuit but is expected back next week. May ran his 3min 53.3 s on the Wanganui track in 1965. Peter Snell’s first world mile record of 3min 54.4 s was also set there in 1962.
