Canterbury on top in water polo

Canterbury is set for a notable treble of victories in the national provincial water polo championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park. After yesterday s second day of matches. Canterbury is heavily favoured to win the men’s A grade, almost certain to take the B grade as well, and looks sure of the women's title.

It really was a most unexpected range of results, after the evenness of the first day. but the Canterbury men really found themselves, and had no problems in accounting for Combined Services in the A grade. But the very useful Policedominated Services team then went out and turned the tables bn Wellington, winning the second matching. 14-13. the same score by which Wellington won on the first dav.

The surprising result, however, was the Canterbury annihilation of Wellington in the women's competition. 18-7, after the two had drawn on the first day. It was a game marked by almost a record count of major fouls — 13 against Canterbury plavers. 14 against Wellington - but Canterbury was never tested.

Though the points table could" indicate otherwise in the men s B grade — Canterbury A without a loss. Wanganui (the title-holder) without a win — this has been by far the best competition. The greatest winning margin in anv of the games has been a mere two goals, and Wanganui has improved out of sight in every game. It is well capable of beating the two Canterbury teams in its remaining games - alas, too late.

The competition concludes tomorrow. Detailed results: Men’s A grade Canterbury 21 (L. J. Marshall 5. J. N. Koehs 4. R. A. Clark 4. J. F. Boyce 3. J. R. Davie 2). Combined Services 10 (P. W. Dyson 4.
