Ice isolation begins

A winter of isolation has begun for 28 people at the American South Pole and Siple stations in Antarctica. The last flight from McMurdo Station to South Pole Station was made on Wednesday, and for the eight people spending the winter at Siple Station their last contact came on Monday. No more flights will be made to the two stations until after the 1983-84 summer season begins in October. The last flights between Christchurch and McMurdo Station are planned for about a fortnight away.

The South Pole Station had two unexpectedly long stays by United States Navy Hercules aircraft during the summer season just ending. In early November the Hercules aircraft making the first landing at the South Pole for the summer suffered damage to nose-gear as the result of a hydraulic problem and was stranded at the Pole for more than two weeks. Late last month another Hercules damaged a nose ski while landing at the Pole and was stranded there for several days while spare parts were flown down.
