Otago well placed
PA Dunedin Solid batting placed Otago in a useful position after the rain-delayed first day of the Shell Trophy cricket match against Auckland at Caris. brook yesterday. Otago scored 234 for seven declared in 309 minutes and 86 overs on a pitch which was extremely slow after persistent rain during the previous five days. Play did not begin until 1.10 p.m„ because water had seeped through the covers on to the pitch. Auckland faced only four overs in reply before the players left the field because of bad light at 7.15 p.m. with Auckland 7 without loss. Otago opened slowly against some fine seam bowling from Warren Stott, but a third-wicket partnership of 70 in 96 minutes
between Bruce Blair and Richard Hoskin gave Otago the initiative. Ken Rutherford (17) a younger brother of the opening batsmen, lan, batted with coolness, technique and maturity and helped, Blair add a further 42 runs for the fourth wicket before Blair was run out going for a second run after turning the ball backward of square. It was a sound display by the Otago batsmen, all but one of whom got into double figures. Otago will be anxious to press home the advantage today against an Auckland batting line-up which has not been as prolific this season as most expected. OTAGO First innings I. A.
