Yachtsman missing
NZPA Sydney Grave fears are held for the safety of a French submarine officer, Jacques De Roux, who is reported missing in the 8.0. C. Challenge solo round-the-world yacht race. De Roux, aged 43, who is sailing Skoiern Three, sent out distress signals about 2700 kilometres off Cape Horn on Wednesday night, but all attempts to locate him have so far been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, an Australian yachtsman, Neville Gosson, was injured when his yacht Pier One keelqd over in gale
force winds several thousand kilometres west of Cape Horn. A spokesman for the race’s communications centre in Sydney said Gosson, aged 55, suffered a head injury and minor burns when his yacht suddenly tipped over throwing him against his cabin wall. Gosson was scalded by water he was boiling which spilt over him. Seventeen yachts left Rhode Island in August last year at the start of the race, but only 11 left Sydney on January 16 this year to head to Rio after six had dropped out.
