Four-day week offered by workers

PA . Wellington General Motors assemblers say they are willing to work a four-day week provided they get paid for five — at the Government's expense. About 200 members of the Engineers' Union met at General Motors Petone plant on Tuesday and agreed on a five-point plan which included the four-day week at five days pay proposal. General Motors issued redundancy notices to 126 workers’last month, but told unions the lay-offs could be heavily reduced if they were prepared to cut 40 days from the company calendar this year — in effect, moving into a four-day week.

A union spokesman said that Tuesday's meeting called for the Engineers’ Union to join the company or the motor industry to seek Government subsidies for the hours the company does not require to be worked.

It is believed by the “Evening Post” that this proposal will be presented to the Government today by the union.

Tuesday's meeting also called for unions actively to pursue voluntary redundancies as a method of cutting compulsory redundancies.
