36 p.c. increase in drowinings
PA Wellington A 36 per cent increase in the number of people drowned during 1982, compared with the previous year, has alarmed the Water Safety Council.
The council's chairman. Mr Douglas Barron, in releasing the figures said that 144 people drowned last year: as against 106 in 1981, which was the highest figure for almost 30 years. Boating accidents accounted for 46 lives.
Mr Barron said there was an urgent need for an increased public education programme to make everybody take more care near water.
Action to implement a programme was discussed by the council, the Ministry of Transport and recreational groups in Wellington this week.
