Cattle escape from truck
A cattle beast turned Pied Piper yesterday morning and led Christchurch police and traffic officers on a merry chase through Hagley Park, the Carlton Hotel car-park, and properties on Papanui Road.
The animal got as far as Bishop Street. St Albans, where it was shot by the police. The beast escaped from a stock truck which overturned at the junction of Papanui Road and Bea ley Avenue about 7 a.m.
Fifteen animals in the truck and the driver were unhurt in the accident, but two animals escaped and headed for North Haglev Park.
Traffic officers and policemen. with the help of a ranger, were quickly on the trail of the runaway pair and one animal was soon caught.
The other showed more rogue qualities. Tired of unwelcome attention, the animal left Hagley Park and made through the Carlton Hotel car-park and into properties in Papanui Road.
It left behind four dented cars, including two police cars.
