Guitarist in concert
John Mills, one of Britain’s leading classical guitarists, will appear at the Christchurch Town Hall on Saturday at 8 p.m. Mills has recently been chief tutor at the New Zealand Federation of Classical Guitar Societies' 1983 summer school at Waiotapu. near Rotorua. He is now making a solo recital tour of New Zealand. His Christchurch recital will include works by Sanz. Handel, Bach, Villa-Lobos, Grieg, Castelnuovo-Tedesco. and Torroba. John Mills is an inter-
national performer of repute, having toured North America, the Far East. Australia. Scandinavia, and Europe. He began studying the guitar at nine, and later went on to the Royal College of Music. London, with John Williams, and then to master classes with Julian Bream. Mills also won a Spanish Government scholarship which enabled him to spend some time in Spain, where he took part in master classes conducted by Andres Segovia.
He made his London debut in 1971. and followed this the next year with a concert tour of Canada which marked his international debut. He lectures at the University of East Anglia, and spends several months abroad each year, giving recitals and chamber concerts, and conducting master classes and workshops. John Mills has also made several recordings, and written books. He has recently been appointed an adjudicator — member of the British Federation of Music Festivals.
