South African policy
Sir,—Those who write to say that South Africa is moving towards dismantling the apartheid system and should therefore be’ “rewarded" by a similar dismantling of the sporting boycott have a fundamental misunderstanding of the political situation in the Republic. First, the backbone of apartheid, the homelands policy, continues to dump black people on obscure patches of unwanted wasteland in an attempt to create a legal white majority in the Republic. Second, “reform" proposals put forward by the Prime Minister, Mr Botha, exclude black participation. Third, token changes in sport are just that — tokens aimed at overseas consumption. All black people want an end to apartheid. All black people know the elimination of apartheid via the Government has not yet begun. — Yours, etc.,
G. R. YARDLEY February 3, 1983.
