Antarctica
Sir,—At- the United Nations the Prime Minister of Malaysia recently warned: “these uninhabited lands belong to the international community ... the days are over when the rich nations can take for themselves whatever they have access to.” Even the Treaty nations are divided over sovereignty, with half making claims which the other half do not recognise. Dr Louis Branscomb has explained (“The Press,” January 14) the unique value of an undisturbed Antarctic environment for research projects of world significance. World park status, long advocated by the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition of organisations in 22 countries, received further support from the Third World Parks Congress in Bali last October. But nationalistic politicians and rapacious industrialists wait impatiently for
technology to make possible their “inevitable” exploitation, and Big Brother has issued his threat at the latest meeting in Wellington. “The United States will not wait indefinitely for an international agreement on developing Antarctic minerals.”— Yours, etc.,
