Jobless teachers
Sir.—As Mr Lowndes implies (“The Press." January 27), teachers are not a "privileged, protected class of labour"; but they certainly should be. In exchange for job security, teachers have accepted lower salaries than they would have if teaching were merely a form of casual labour. But now NewZealand has fallen on hard times, teachers are being put out of work without compensation for redundancy; and some newly-qualified teachers find they have wasted three years of study for a non-existent job. Who is to blame for teachers being without jobs? None other than the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington. With the information available it must be easy to forecast accurately the number of pupils in State schools for the next five years,
and even beyond. It is a gross blunder to train more teachers than a forecast indicates are needed. Managers have been sacked and businessmen made bankrupt for blunders less gross—Yours, etc.. F. ROBINSON. January 28, 1983.
