U.S. policy
Sir,—President Reagan makes some puzzling statements in his state of the union message ("The Press," January 27). Mr Reagan told the Kremlin: "responsible members of the world community do not threaten or invade their neighbours and they restrain their allies from aggression." These words come from the same Mr Reagan whose Administration is largely responsible for the mass slaughter of peasants in El Salvador, America's near neighbour. The same Mr Reagan is backing, financially and economically, the murderous Somoza regime in its bid to invade democratic Nicaragua, another near neighbour. Again, the same Mr Reagan twiddled his thumbs while America’s ally. Israel, devastated Beirut, killing thousands of innocent civilians. “Let Poland be Poland," Mr Reagan said. I agree, and the same principle applies to El Salvador and Nicaragua — Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. January 28, 1983.
