Fruit fly

Sir,—l do not understand why the import of fruit and vegetables from Australia into New Zealand cannot be controlled to protect our agriculture from pests. Some while ago I crossed from Sydney to Perth by train and drove a motor caravan back to Sydney via Albany in the south-west. There were fruit fly controls by train and by road, between New South Wales and Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, Victoria and South

Australia, and South Australia and Western Australia. The latter state had an internal fruit control between Perth and Albany. These were individual controls, fruit not eaten was confiscated, but presumably there are regulations governing the bulk movement of fruit. If there can be controls between and within Australian states then despite C.E.R. it should be possible to maintain them between Australia and New Zealand.—Yours, etc.. H. F. NEWMAN. January 28. 1983.
