Sea life dying 8km off Northland coast
PA Whangarei A mystery killer is destroying marine life in a 9km stretch of water off Northland's east coast, from Waipu to Bream Tail. The affected area is about Bkm out to sea. Divers and fishermen in the area have reported entire catches of dead fish and shellfish, including such hardy specimens as octopuses and large cockles.
Samples from the affected area are being tested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and Northland Catchment Commission staff, but the results are not expected until early next week. Fresh samples for further testing were being gathered by fishermen and divers yesterday, and some will be sent to the Cawthron Institute in Nelson for more detailed analysis.
