American men seek. ‘homes’
A disappointing response is evident to a call for South Islanders to take American servicemen into their homes for a week in December or January.
Project Kia-ora has been organised for the last 10 years by the United States Naval Support Force. Antarctica. The Navy asks for a family to invite a serviceman into its home for his final week’s leave before returning to the Antarctic for a winter of isolation. The servicemen have a variety of interests, including hunting; fishing, tramping, just visiting a farm, or even spending time in the city. The public affairs officer .’. at the base, Chief Petty • Officer Dan Guzman, said . that only about six calls had been received, while about 30 servicemen were wanting to take part in the project. Last year more offers were received than there were servicemen available to take them up. Anyone who is interested in taking part should telephone the base (telephone 583-079) and ask for Project >• Kia-ora.
