Forum issues N-warning
New Zealand is being talked into allowing nuclear weapons in the Pacific under the guise of a perceived Soviet threat, according to the Christchurch Peace Forum.
In a statement to the press, a spokesman for the forum called on New Zealanders to be aware of the true purpose of the visit to New Zealand by the United States Secretary of Defence, Mr Caspar Weinberger. The spokesman said that New Zealand was being “seduced into acquiescence of United States intentions to spread their suicidal nuclear arsenals into our region.
“We onesidedly hear of the increase of Soviet military power in the Pacific but hear nothing of the considerable United States military presence already there and about to be increased with the launching of the first Trident submarines,” the spokesman said.
