Ivory Coast rally starts
NZPA-Reuter Abidjan The- four-day Ivory Coast motor rally began yesterday with the 51 starters roaring out of Abidjan to the strains of a West African big band. A noisy crowd cheered as the drivers set off on a 5000 km course on dirt tracks through bush and tropical forest. The two contenders for the 1982 drivers championship — Michelle Mouton, of France.
and Walter Rohrl. of West Germany — drew the loudest applause. Miss Mouton, second in the table, could virtually sew up the title if she brings her Audi Quattro home first in this fourteenth Ivory Coast Rally, the season’s penultimate event. The original entry list of 64 was whittled down to the bare minimum for a worldrated event of 51 after technical checks.
