Griffiths ‘Player of Year’
PA Wellington An eighteen-year-old Aucklander, Barry Griffiths, has been named “Player of the Year” by the Table Tennis Association. The association’s secretary, Ken Wilkinson, said yesterday that Griffiths earned the honour for beating Australia’s open champion, Paul Pinkewich, and the junior champion, Gary
Haberl. in the team’s contest at the recent Oceania tournament. Pinkewich’s loss to the young New Zealander was his only defeat at the tournament. Also bearing on the award was Griffiths’ remarkable achievement at this year's national championships when he won several divisions including the men’s open singles.
