Philp superb
PA Auckland Graeme Philp, a Urenui horticulturist, yesterday captured the national epee title, his first, at the national fencing championships at Auckland. He was in superb form at the Sir William Jordan Memorial Hall in Onehunga. He dropped only one bout in the preliminary rounds and then relaxed enough after winning the title to lose a team’s bout to Steve Martin, aged 18, of Auckland. Stephen Clarke (Auckland) did not defend his epee title because of a knee injury, but Philp had to contend with the skills of Martin Brill (Auckland), the titleholder of 1979 and 1980. Philp beat Brill in the first round, in the semi-finals and the final. Wayne Hudson received the Maitre D’Armes Trophy for winning first place in the foil, second in the epee, and fifth in the sabre titles. Hud-
son also won the trophy in 1980. The R. J. Towns Champion Province Trophy again went to Auckland, which has now won it for each of the last four years, to equal the tenure of Wellington in 1975-78. The women’s foil plate went to Jane Lindsay (Canterbury), who beat Jenny Williams (Otago-Southland) in the final:
