Obituary Mr Martin Winiata
Mr Martin Rangi Kapiki Winiata. a professional musician and teacher who enlivened many Christchurch Saturday nights in the 1940 s and 19505. died last week in Taupo. Mr Winiata. who was 75. played a number of instruments but his favourite was the saxophone: he was able to play two saxophones at once. Mr Winiata. a band leader and arranger, played a variety of popular music styles including jazz. When rock 'n' roll arrived he switched to the new beat with ease. He also played music for radio and theatre and toured extensively. The Martin Winiata Band was a regular crowd pleaser at thp Union Rnwinp Clnh in
Christchurch several decades ago. Mr Tommy Kahi. a friend and fellow performer, said Mr Winiata was a "wonderful personality, great to play with." “He trained hundreds and hundreds of musicians," said Mr Kahi. Among the instruments Mr Winiata taught were guitar, drums, bass, and clarinet. In the mid 19605, Mr Winiata toured the North Island and then settled in Taupo. In 1974, he began teaching in the Taupo. Tokoroa, and Rotorua areas. He enjoyed teaching, said Mr Kahi. and until recently still taught a few pupils. Mr Winiata is survived by his: wife Marie
