First days play in Booth Shield
Nelson reporter
Consistent scoring over the first two rounds brought its reward for Nelson A when the first day’s play in the Booth Shield, inter-provincial golf tournament was completed at Nelson yesterday. Nelson A had taken a 10stroke lead over Marlborough at the end of the day with Otago third and Canterbury fourth. The holder, Wellington, was well back 'in the field. The Booth Shield is competed for on handicap by mixed teams up to the age of 25. Ten teams from Waikato to Otago are competing in the tournament which ends today. The most notable perform-
ance was that of Tasman’s newly acquired No 1 Freyberg Rose Bowl representative, Stephen Street, who finished square with the card. Street, heading the boys in the Nelson B side, had a one under 17 morning round, and dropped only one shot in the afternoon.
Nelson’s top woman, the national’ representative, Debbie Randell (plus two) carded a 77 in the morning and a three over 76 in the afternoon after dropping all three strokes on the last two holes.
The other outstanding performances was that of a 36handicapper, Julie Vining (Nelson A). She carded 110 in the morning, but returned a 100 for a net 64 in the afternoon.
