Queensland compile mammoth total against English attack

NZPA Brisbane The Queensland batsmen, Greg Chappell and Kepler Wessels, made superb centuries against a near teststrength England attack at the Brisbane Cricket Ground yesterday. Queensland pounded its way to a mammoth second innings total of three for'4oo to lead over all by 325 with one day to play. Queensland declared its first innings closed at 9/297, while the English replied in their first innings with a total of 372.

Poor catching by the tourists made the task ever harder for England’s bowlers who were without a wicket until 30 minutes after lunch following Queensland’s resumption from 0-24 overnight. The one bright spot for England was the lightning fast stumping of Wayne Broad by veteran wicketkeeper Bob Taylor. The stumping gave Taylor

a world record of 1528 dismissals in first class cricket, one more than former England and Middlesex keeper John Murray. Taylor’s test career started in New Zealand in 1971 and he has played 42 tests since becoming the regular England keeper in 1977.

The Englishmen however, found little else to cheer about as Wessels and Rob Kerr added 152 in almost even time for the first wicket.

Then Chappell was in an attacking mood, posting his twentieth-century • for Queensland with 11 fours and two sixes.

Chappell at stumps was 111 not out, adding an unbroken 144 for the fourth wicket with Brett Henschell 50 not out.

Chappell said Queensland would bat on for at least half an hour today before declaring.

“The pitch is playing so

well and 1 don’t want to hand them a win on a platter," Chappell said. On Saturday England looked set to give Queensland a big score to chase when David Gower and Allan Lamb got chanceless centuries to give the tourists’ innings a good start. However, a mid-inning collapse saw their hopes of a big lead fade and they were all out for 372, a lead on Queensland's first innings of 75. Queensland has not beaten a touring English team since the 1929-30 season.
